Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Pablo Guanipa was detained again only hours after being released from prison, in an incident that has sparked strong reactions within the country’s political opposition. According to opposition leader María Corina Machado, Guanipa was forcibly intercepted by heavily armed men dressed in civilian clothing, who took him away in several vehicles in a residential area of Caracas.

The incident reportedly took place in the Los Chorros neighborhood in the northern part of the capital. Opposition figures said the operation was carried out without visibly presenting a judicial warrant and occurred in front of witnesses. Shortly afterward, authorities stated that Guanipa had been placed under house arrest and that judicial authorization for the measure was being sought, citing an alleged violation of the conditions of his release.

The public prosecutor’s office indicated that Guanipa had failed to comply with the restrictions imposed after his release, while leaving open the possibility that the situation could lead to a renewed formal detention. Juan Pablo Guanipa, 61, is a prominent figure within Venezuela’s opposition and previously served as vice president of the National Assembly. His recent release had been seen by some as a political signal from the government toward opposition sectors. Perkins Rocha, a former legal adviser to María Corina Machado, was also released at the same time, reinforcing the perception of a temporary political gesture that now appears to be in question.

Hours before his re-arrest, Guanipa had shared public messages calling for the release of additional political prisoners and openly challenging the legitimacy of the current government. In those statements, he also urged authorities to respect the outcome of the 2024 presidential election, which the opposition maintains was won by candidate Edmundo González Urrutia over incumbent president Nicolás Maduro.

Guanipa’s renewed detention comes amid heightened political tension in Venezuela, following disputed election results, violent protests that left dozens dead, thousands of arrests, and the exile of key opposition figures, deepening the country’s institutional uncertainty.
