U.S. federal authorities foiled a coordinated plot involving explosive attacks that, according to investigators, were planned for New Year’s Eve in Los Angeles and other strategic locations across Southern California. Officials said an extremist group calling itself the Turtle Island Liberation Front intended to detonate improvised explosive devices at at least five different sites, aiming to spread fear and deliver a radical political message. The arrests were carried out over the weekend following a joint federal operation and were made public on Monday, after authorities confirmed that the plot had been dismantled before it could be carried out.

The investigation revealed that the suspects had been assembling and testing homemade explosives in a remote area of Lucerne Valley, in the Mojave Desert, where four of the individuals were taken into custody. A fifth suspect was arrested in New Orleans and is believed to be connected to the same organization and related activities. Those detained are facing serious charges, including conspiracy and possession of explosive devices, while investigators continue to analyze seized materials and digital communications that reportedly show detailed and coordinated planning.

On social media, the group promoted a strong ideological narrative, calling for the “liberation of Turtle Island,” a term used by some Indigenous communities to refer to North America, and denouncing what they described as an illegitimate U.S. empire. Their posts also included slogans supporting Palestine, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, framing these causes as part of a broader global struggle against American imperialism.

Authorities believe this rhetoric played a key role in the radicalization process, serving to justify the use of violence as a political tool. The U.S. attorney general said the operation was the result of close cooperation between the Department of Justice and the FBI, and noted that the group had also considered targeting Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and vehicles.

Officials emphasized that dismantling the cell prevented a potentially deadly scenario and helped ensure public safety during a particularly sensitive time of the year. The case unfolds amid ongoing social tensions and protests related to immigration policy, especially in cities such as Los Angeles, where unrest has erupted in recent months. Authorities stressed that they will continue to pursue violent extremist groups and hold accountable those who, under ideological banners, seek to endanger civilian lives.
