A deadly explosion shook the Biscailuz Training Center of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department this Friday morning, July 18, 2025, leaving three deputies dead and one injured, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. while members of the bomb squad were handling an explosive device—possibly recovered from a prior operation—and although the exact cause is still under investigation, officials believe it may have been an accident during a training maneuver.
Sheriff Robert Luna confirmed that the three deceased officers were veterans of the explosives team, with over 74 years of combined service, making it the department's greatest loss since 1857. A fourth deputy was transported to a hospital, though their condition has not been publicly disclosed. The area was quickly cordoned off after the explosion. A police helicopter hovered overhead as emergency crews, firefighters, and specialized units arrived on the scene.
A sheriff’s SUV was visibly damaged by the blast, demonstrating the force of the detonation. Several agencies have joined the investigation, including the LAPD, the FBI, and the ATF. Governor Gavin Newsom was briefed on the incident, and the California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is now collaborating with local authorities. Attorney General Pam Bondi called the event "horrific" and confirmed that federal agents are currently analyzing the scene.
The Biscailuz Training Center, renovated in 2017, houses specialized units such as the bomb squad and has seen previous incidents, including fires in training ranges. As a safety measure, a large tarp was placed over the explosion site while bomb technicians searched for any remaining hazardous materials. Witnesses in the area reported hearing a loud bang followed by shattering glass, causing alarm among nearby residents.
Sheriff Luna expressed deep sorrow, describing the situation as “an indescribable tragedy,” and promised a thorough investigation. Leaders such as Mayor Karen Bass and county supervisors Kathryn Barger and Janice Hahn offered their condolences and praised the bravery and sacrifice of the fallen deputies. Although there is no evidence suggesting intentional foul play at this time, the incident has highlighted the constant risks faced by bomb squad officers. Authorities continue working to fully determine the cause of this tragic accident.
