A drone attack struck a passenger train in eastern Ukraine, killing civilians and injuring dozens in one of the most severe incidents involving non-military targets in recent weeks. Ukrainian authorities blamed Russia for the strike, which directly hit a carriage carrying nearly 200 passengers. The attack took place in the Kharkiv region, where a drone slammed into one of the train cars while it was in transit. Officials reported at least five fatalities, with several passengers seriously wounded.
The train was operating on a regular civilian route and had no military function, heightening outrage over the nature of the attack. Emergency crews rushed to the scene to evacuate passengers and provide medical assistance amid the wreckage. The strike on the train came only hours after another wave of drone attacks targeted the southern port city of Odesa. Those attacks left at least three people dead and more than twenty injured, according to local authorities.
At the same time, Russia has intensified assaults on critical infrastructure, particularly Ukraine’s energy system. Large portions of the country remain without electricity as winter temperatures drop, deepening the humanitarian crisis. In the capital, Kyiv, more than 700,000 residents continue to face power outages linked to recent attacks. Officials warned that ongoing strikes are delaying repair efforts and prolonging disruptions to daily life.
The attack occurred just days after Ukrainian and Russian representatives held diplomatic contacts aimed at easing tensions and exploring possible paths toward ending the conflict, casting doubt on the prospects for meaningful progress. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike, stating that there is no justification for targeting civilians. He stressed that such attacks undermine any diplomatic efforts and prolong the suffering of the population.
Zelenskyy also urged international partners to increase pressure on Moscow, arguing that deliberate attacks on civilian targets represent a dangerous escalation of the war. As diplomatic efforts continue, the conflict in Ukraine shows no clear signs of de-escalation. The attack on the passenger train underscores the ongoing vulnerability of civilians in a war that remains far from resolution.
