Years after the most intense fighting of Syria’s civil war subsided, daily life for millions of civilians remains defined by hardship. The end of large-scale combat has not translated into a meaningful improvement in living conditions. Across many towns and cities, families continue to survive in makeshift shelters, occupying damaged structures or partially destroyed homes. What were once permanent residences now serve as fragile refuges, often lacking basic safety and comfort.

Aleppo, one of the cities hardest hit by the conflict, offers a stark illustration of this reality. Access to even a single livable room has become increasingly scarce, with prices frequently pushed beyond what most residents can afford. The devastation extends well beyond housing. Much of the urban infrastructure remains heavily damaged, disrupting access to electricity, clean water, and transportation. In many areas, basic services operate sporadically or have yet to be restored.

Education has also suffered deeply. Thousands of schools were destroyed or rendered unusable during the war, leaving children and young people with limited or no access to formal education, further entrenching long-term social challenges. Reconstruction efforts continue at a slow and uneven pace, constrained by economic collapse, limited funding, and international sanctions. For many families, rebuilding a stable home remains an unattainable goal.

Humanitarian organizations warn that without sustained economic recovery and social investment, the country risks entering a prolonged humanitarian crisis. Existing aid, while vital, falls short of addressing the scale of destruction. High unemployment and rising prices have compounded daily struggles, reducing access to food, healthcare, and essential services. For many Syrians, survival remains the central concern.

A generation is now growing up amid uncertainty, shaped by years of instability and limited opportunity. The long-term consequences of this reality are likely to extend far beyond Syria’s borders. Syria’s experience underscores a broader truth: the conclusion of armed conflict does not automatically mark the beginning of recovery. For millions, the path toward rebuilding life has yet to truly begin.
