A rare oil painting of Indian national hero Mahatma Gandhi has sold at auction in London for £152,800 (approximately $ 200,000). This far exceeded the estimated value of the painting, painted in 1931 by artist Clare Leighton.
As announced by Bonhams auction house, the painting so far exceeded the estimated value of £50,000 to £70,000. The painting, painted in 1931 by artist Clare Leighton, is considered the only portrait for which Gandhi himself posed. said the artist's great-nephew, Caspar Leighton, before the auction. It was exhibited in London in November 1931 and again in 1978 at an exhibition of the artist's work in Boston. After Clare Leighton's death, the painting was inherited by his great-nephew's father, and then by himself. Caspar has a desire to make it accessible to more people. "Maybe he should return to India—maybe that's his true home."
