Amazon has confirmed the acquisition of Bee, an innovative technology startup that has developed an artificial intelligence-powered wristband capable of listening to everyday conversations and generating useful transcripts and summaries for the user. The announcement, made this week, has generated significant interest in the tech industry, marking Amazon's return to the competitive smart wearable device market. Bee has positioned itself as one of the most promising startups in the field of AI-powered wearables.

Its flagship product is a Fitbit-like wristband that, for $49.99 (with an optional subscription), records everything the user hears throughout the day and converts it into text. This technology, according to its developers, aims to provide a truly useful assistant in daily life, offering meeting summaries, to-do reminders, and even tracking spontaneous ideas. The transaction, which is still pending completion, has not disclosed financial details, but all current Bee employees are expected to join Amazon's device team, possibly under the direction of Panos Panay.

This integration is part of Amazon's strategy to strengthen its smart device ecosystem, especially after the market exit of its failed Halo project in 2023. One of the aspects that has drawn the most attention from the public and experts is the issue of privacy. According to Bee and Amazon, the device does not store audio recordings, but instead transcribes them in real time and deletes them later. It will also feature features such as a quick shutdown button and advanced privacy settings.

Still, some critics warn about the possible use of data to train internal AI models, something Amazon has strongly denied so far. With this acquisition, Amazon seeks to reposition itself in the race to control the ambient intelligence space, in direct competition with companies such as Apple, Google, Meta, and OpenAI. Experts point out that this strategic move could allow Amazon to integrate more advanced technologies into its Alexa assistant, as well as launch new wearable products that leverage AI in more proactive and personalized ways.

Meanwhile, Bee will continue to operate under its name and with its current device, although it's not ruled out that in the future the startup's technology could be merged with the Echo product line or with new, as-yet-unveiled launches. For users, this means they could be about to experience a new generation of personal assistants, capable of accompanying them at all times, remembering what they said throughout the day, and helping them organize their lives with just a strap on their wrist.
