Egypt were forced into extra time to secure their place in the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations, narrowly avoiding an early exit that would have been a major shock for the tournament’s most successful nation. The Pharaohs defeated Benin 3–1 on Monday in Agadir after a tense encounter that extended beyond regulation time. After 90 minutes, the scoreboard showed a 1–1 draw, sending both teams into extra time. Egypt, heavy favorites on paper, found themselves under pressure from a disciplined and determined Benin side that refused to back down.
The Egyptian team had taken the lead in the 69th minute through a powerful long-range strike by Marwan Attia, a goal that appeared to put them on course for a routine victory. However, Benin responded late in the match. In the 83rd minute, Jodel Dossou stunned Egypt with a spectacular shot from distance, leveling the score and forcing extra time. In the additional 30 minutes, Egypt’s experience and composure finally made the difference. The breakthrough came in the 97th minute when Yasser Ibrahim rose highest to score with an outstanding header, marking his first international goal. As Benin pushed forward in search of another equalizer, spaces opened up at the back.
Deep into extra time, in the 124th minute, Mohamed Salah sealed the victory with a clinical counterattacking finish, ending any hopes of a comeback. Salah’s goal not only confirmed the result but also highlighted his leadership at crucial moments, providing calm and efficiency when Egypt needed it most. With this win, Egypt advance to the quarterfinals, where the challenge will intensify.
The seven-time African champions will face either Burkina Faso or defending champions Ivory Coast in the next round. That quarterfinal clash is set to take place once again in Agadir, the venue that has already delivered a dramatic night for the Pharaohs. While the performance was not flawless, Egypt’s ability to prevail under pressure keeps their continental ambitions alive as they continue their quest for another Africa Cup of Nations title.
