Nick Reiner, the son of renowned film director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele, has lost his lead attorney as he faces trial for the alleged murder of his parents. During a court hearing in Los Angeles, defense attorney Alan Jackson announced his withdrawal from the case, stating that he had no alternative but to step down from representing the defendant. “At this point, we felt we had no choice but to request permission to withdraw from our representation,” Jackson told Judge Theresa McGonigle, according to U.S. media reports.

When asked by the court whether he agreed with the decision, Nick Reiner, 32, responded, “Yes, I agree, Your Honor.” Reiner appeared in court wearing a brown prison jumpsuit over a white T-shirt, with his hair cut short. While the judge allowed a camera inside the courtroom, filming of the defendant was prohibited at the request of the defense. The formal reading of the charges, which was scheduled for this hearing, was postponed until February 23, and the court appointed a public defender to represent Reiner moving forward.

The departure of the high-profile attorney has fueled speculation that the Reiner family may no longer be willing to cover the substantial legal fees associated with the case. Despite stepping aside, Jackson emphasized that he and his team continue to support Reiner’s legal position. “We have thoroughly investigated this matter, from top to bottom,” he said, adding that in his view, Reiner “is not guilty of murder under California law.” Prosecutors have charged the 32-year-old with two counts of murder. If convicted, he faces a potential sentence of life in prison, and possibly the death penalty.

At an earlier court appearance in December, Reiner declined to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty. Nick Reiner was arrested in mid-December, approximately six hours after police discovered the bodies of his parents in their home in the affluent Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. Rob Reiner, the director behind acclaimed films such as When Harry Met Sally, Misery, and A Few Good Men, was 78 years old. His wife Michele, a professional photographer, was 70, according to the prosecution.

The couple, who married in 1989, had three children together: Jake, Nick, and Romy. In addition, Rob Reiner adopted the daughter of his first wife, filmmaker and actress Penny Marshall. The case continues to draw significant public attention as further court proceedings are expected in the coming weeks.
