Ethel Cain, whose real name is Hayden Silas Anhedönia, has established herself as one of the most distinctive voices in today’s alternative music, blending influences of folk, dream pop, ambient, and Southern gothic aesthetics to tell stories shaped by religion, identity, and personal trauma. Born in Florida into a strict Baptist family, she began experimenting with music in 2017 and in 2019 adopted the stage name Ethel Cain, an alter ego that allowed her to explore intense and dark narratives through her songs.
She rose to prominence in 2022 with her debut album Preacher’s Daughter, a conceptual work acclaimed by critics, which in 2025 became the first album by a trans artist to enter the Billboard 200 top 10 following its vinyl reissue.
This year, Cain released the Perverts EP, described as her most experimental project, followed by her second studio album Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You, conceived as an atmospheric prequel to Preacher’s Daughter.
Tracks such as Nettles and Fuck Me Eyes reached international charts in countries including Australia, New Zealand, and Scotland. To promote this new work, she launched the Willoughby Tucker Forever Tour, which began in Seattle in August and will travel across North America, Europe, and Oceania through February 2026, with more than 60 concerts scheduled and the shoegaze band 9Million as supporting act. Beyond her music.
Cain has defended her creative independence by parting ways with Dr. Luke’s label Prescription Songs to produce her work autonomously. At the same time, she has candidly addressed past controversies, calling some of her old messages “deeply embarrassing,” demonstrating a maturity that strengthens her artistic authenticity.
With her unmistakable visual and sonic style, Ethel Cain today stands as a key figure in the global alternative scene, praised both by music critics and renowned artists, and regarded as a symbol of courage, creativity, and resilience within contemporary music.
