Who would dare to say no to an immoral offer from a Hollywood legend? Eddie Murphy did. While promoting his new documentary Being Eddie, the actor recalled turning down an invitation for a cocaine marathon with Robin Williams when he was just 19. But that wasn’t the only shocking proposal he ever received. In another unexpected story, Murphy revealed that he was once invited to have sex with the wife of a well-known colleague in the industry.
Murphy was celebrating his 21st birthday in 1982 at the iconic New York club Studio 54 when an older, bald man approached him with an unusual offer. The man was Yul Brynner, star of The Ten Commandments, who was accompanied by his young wife. According to Murphy, Brynner asked him, “Would you like to come to my apartment so you can keep celebrating with my wife and me?” Murphy declined politely, the same way he had turned down Williams years earlier.
Later, remembering the woman’s subtle smile, he joked that he might have missed out on a “legendary Hollywood story with a happy ending.” Brynner died three years later from lung cancer, and it remains unclear which of his wives Murphy was referring to. The veteran actor divorced Jacqueline de Croisset in 1981 and married Malaysian actress Kathy Lee, who was 35 years younger, in 1983. However, Brynner was already seen with the young beauty during Murphy’s 21st birthday celebration, adding another layer of curiosity to a night that could have become one of the most extravagant anecdotes of his life.
