In response to recent violations of European airspace attributed to Russia, the United States firmly reaffirmed its commitment to defend the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) against any act of aggression. Michael Waltz, the new U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, emphasized during a special Security Council meeting in New York that “the United States and its allies will defend every inch of NATO territory,” making clear that the transatlantic alliance remains united and determined to deter Moscow.

Waltz further stressed that Russia should avoid escalating the conflict and instead seek a negotiated settlement directly with Ukraine to bring the war to an end, rather than resorting to provocations that destabilize the region. The latest incident occurred in Estonia, where local authorities reported that three Russian fighter jets entered the country’s airspace for approximately twelve minutes last Friday. Moscow denied the allegations, but Estonian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger denounced on social media platform X that such maneuvers are part of a “pattern of Russian provocations,” calling the situation “unacceptable” as it constitutes a violation of the territorial integrity of a sovereign state.

Tensions also escalated in Poland and Romania, both NATO members, after Russian drones were detected following a massive airstrike on Ukraine on the night of September 10. The Polish Air Force, together with other allied units, intercepted and shot down several drones for the first time before they could reach their targets. Nevertheless, fragments of at least 18 drones were found in various areas of eastern and central Poland, while Romania confirmed the presence of debris on its territory. These incidents reignite concerns about the possibility of the war in Ukraine spilling across borders and testing NATO’s collective defense mechanisms at a time of growing uncertainty in European security.
