U.S. President Donald Trump issued a strong warning on Monday, threatening to significantly increase import tariffs on India due to what he described as “massive purchases of Russian oil.” Trump made the announcement on his own social media platform, Truth Social, accusing the Indian government not only of buying large volumes of oil from Russia, but also of reselling it on the open market for profit. “India is not only purchasing enormous amounts of Russian oil,” Trump wrote, “but they are also reselling a large portion of it on the open market at significant profits.

They do not care how many people die in Ukraine at the hands of Russia’s war machine.” As a result, Trump stated that he will move to “significantly increase the import tariffs that India pays to the United States.” This comes just days after Trump had already announced plans to impose a 25 percent tariff on Indian goods, a move that could further escalate trade tensions between the two nations.

Back in mid-July, Trump also threatened Russia with so-called “secondary tariffs.” These would target countries that continue to trade with Russia, potentially affecting a wide range of U.S. allies and trade partners. The latest comments from Trump signal a more aggressive stance not only on foreign trade but also on the ongoing geopolitical fallout of the Russia–Ukraine war.

Observers have noted that Trump’s remarks could have far-reaching consequences for international trade relations, especially considering India’s growing role as a global energy player and strategic ally in Asia. However, no formal action has been taken yet, and it remains to be seen whether these threats will materialize into concrete policy.
