In New York, a man shot at least four people in a skyscraper before taking his own life. Among the dead in the office building was also a police officer, and several others were injured. The motive of the perpetrator remains unclear. Mayor Eric Adams described the incident as a “senseless act of violence,” the background of which is still under investigation.

The shooter is said to have had a history of mental illness. According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, surveillance footage showed the shooter exiting a car on Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan on Monday night and walking toward the office building. Armed with an assault rifle, he entered the building and immediately opened fire. He killed a New York police officer who was in the lobby.

According to Tisch, he then shot a woman who had taken cover behind a pillar and a security officer behind the reception desk. The shooter allowed a woman to exit an elevator unharmed before riding to the 33rd floor, where he killed another person and finally shot himself. Several people were also injured, some seriously. Shooter Had Mental Health Issues According to Tisch, the perpetrator was a 27-year-old man from the desert metropolis of Las Vegas.

In his car, police found multiple weapons, ammunition, and personal belongings. Investigators believe the man had driven across the United States in the days prior to the attack, traveling through Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and New Jersey before arriving in New York. The man had a documented history of mental illness, Tisch said. However, his motive remains unclear.

Police believe he acted alone. NFL Offices in the Building The high-rise building in Midtown Manhattan houses offices of the investment firm Blackstone and the National Football League (NFL), among others. It was initially unclear why the perpetrator chose that specific building. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that the FBI is assisting in the investigation. Over Midtown Manhattan, where the incident occurred, police and TV helicopters circled overhead during the night. Streets surrounding the skyscraper were filled with emergency vehicles flashing blue lights.
