Danville, Virginia City Councilman Lee Vogler, 38, was seriously injured on Wednesday when a man entered a local magazine where he worked, doused him with gasoline, and set him on fire in what authorities describe as a personal conflict unrelated to his political role. Vogler was airlifted to a specialized burn unit in North Carolina; his current condition is unknown, although reports say he was conscious and able to identify his attacker.
The alleged assailant, 29-year-old Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, entered the workplace with a five-gallon bucket of gasoline and poured it over Vogler, who managed to escape the building and was set ablaze shortly afterward. Hayes fled the scene but was arrested a few blocks away and now faces charges of first-degree attempted murder and aggravated malicious wounding.
Authorities emphasize that the attack was not politically motivated, as Vogler and Hayes knew each other and the conflict was strictly personal. The incident has shocked the local community and officials, including Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and Danville’s Vice Mayor, who expressed condemnation, prayers, and support for the councilman.
Vogler, first elected to the city council at the age of 24, is known for his dedication to public service, local initiatives, and active involvement in community programs. Showcase magazine, where he worked, called for swift justice and strongly condemned this senseless act of violence.
