The highly anticipated meeting between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded in Anchorage, Alaska, without a ceasefire agreement or concrete progress in the war between Russia and Ukraine, now in its third year. The summit, which had raised great expectations within the international community, left more doubts than certainties and opened a new chapter of diplomatic tensions between the major powers.

During the talks, which lasted several hours, Trump described the dialogue as “very productive,” although he admitted that no formal commitments were reached. The Republican leader insisted that “Ukraine needs to make a deal” and stressed that Russia is “too powerful to think it can be defeated on the battlefield.” His remarks were widely interpreted as a call for Kyiv to consider territorial concessions in order to achieve peace, a stance that generated concern in Europe and within parts of the U.S. administration.

For his part, Vladimir Putin remained firm in his demand that Ukraine cede the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk as a minimum condition to freeze the conflict on other fronts. According to diplomatic sources, the Russian leader told Trump that only under these conditions would he be willing to discuss a ceasefire, something Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky firmly rejects, considering it a direct attack on his country’s territorial integrity.

The Alaska summit, beyond its lack of tangible results, carried strong symbolic weight. Russia celebrated the fact that the United States hosted Putin on American soil, interpreting it as a gesture of international legitimacy amid the sanctions and political isolation Moscow continues to face. However, for European allies, the meeting fueled concern that Trump may seek to impose a quick settlement that favors Russia more than Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the White House confirmed that Zelensky will travel to Washington in the coming days to meet with Trump again, possibly alongside invited European leaders. The goal will be to ensure Ukraine is not left out of the negotiations and that any eventual agreement is discussed with all parties involved. The day made clear how difficult it will be to reach an immediate solution to the conflict.

Neither Trump nor Putin budged in their positions, and the absence of a ceasefire agreement only prolongs uncertainty over Ukraine’s future and Europe’s stability. Despite Trump’s optimistic statements, the reality is that the summit ended without concrete progress, leaving the sense that peace remains far from being achieved.
