Russia appears to be moving forward with the deployment of nuclear-capable hypersonic missiles in Belarus, taking a step that reinforces earlier warnings issued by President Vladimir Putin. According to U.S. researchers, Moscow has begun positioning Orezhnik medium-range missiles at a former air base in eastern Belarus, a strategically sensitive area close to NATO’s eastern flank.

The Orezhnik missiles are believed to have an estimated range of up to 5,500 kilometers and to travel at more than ten times the speed of sound. Putin has claimed that such weapons are virtually impossible to intercept. Analysts see the reported deployment as a direct response to plans by the United States to station new missiles in Germany next year, a move Russia has repeatedly described as a threat to its security.

The assessment is based on satellite imagery reviewed by Jeffrey Lewis of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies and Decker Eveleth of CNA. The images show rapid construction activity at the site between August 4 and August 12, including a military rail transfer point and a concrete-and-earth-covered area that could serve as a camouflaged launch position. Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin recently described the plans as “our response” to what he called aggressive actions by the West.

Following a meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in December 2024, Putin had announced that the missiles could be deployed in Belarus in the second half of this year. Last week, Lukashenko stated that the first systems had already been delivered. However, researchers believe the identified location may only accommodate three launch platforms, despite Lukashenko’s claim that up to ten Orezhnik missiles could be stationed in Belarus.

Even at that scale, analysts say the deployment would significantly expand Russia’s ability to strike targets across much of Europe, an assessment that largely aligns with findings from Western intelligence agencies and underscores concerns about a broader strategic escalation in the region.
