Controversy has intensified in the United States after more than 500 employees of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) received layoff notices amid the shock following the recent shooting at the agency’s headquarters in Atlanta. According to authorities, the measure is part of a restructuring effort led by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), but the timing and the scale of the cuts have provoked strong backlash both inside and outside the agency.

It is estimated that between 500 and 600 workers, including scientists, technicians, and administrative staff, were affected by the decision, sparking alarm among public health experts who warn that these losses will seriously undermine the CDC’s ability to respond to health emergencies and maintain epidemiological surveillance programs.

More than 750 current and former employees signed an open letter accusing Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. of deliberately dismantling public health infrastructure and spreading misinformation about vaccines, which they argue puts the health of millions of Americans at risk.

The shooting at CDC headquarters, which occurred just weeks ago, had already raised concerns about safety and stability within the agency, but the mass layoffs have intensified unrest, fueling internal protests and an escalating political debate in Washington.

Critics argue that the restructuring is not only ill-timed but also reflects a broader strategy of institutional weakening that could leave the country vulnerable to future pandemics or public health crises. HHS, however, defended the measure by arguing that it seeks to modernize the agency’s structure, cut unnecessary expenses, and improve efficiency.

Nevertheless, for much of the scientific community, the immediate effect will be the loss of decades of accumulated expertise and a reduced response capacity at a time when trust in health institutions is already facing unprecedented challenges.

The episode has opened yet another rift in the national debate over the role of government in health management, pitting opposing views on how the public health system should be reorganized and to what extent politics is influencing decisions that should be focused solely on protecting the population.
