Hollywood star Matt Damon (54) has achieved what many only dream of: alongside quiz legend Ken Jennings, he won the U.S. celebrity edition of the million-dollar show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, ending on a question that could melt the hearts of even the most devoted language lovers. In the special episode of the ABC show hosted by Jimmy Kimmel,
Damon and Jennings confidently reached the $1 million question level. And humor wasn’t lacking—of course, the long-standing mock feud between Damon and Kimmel was playfully referenced throughout. When they reached the $500,000 question, Damon dryly joked: “He’s useless,” clearly referring to host Kimmel. Kimmel shot back immediately: “A certain weasel has made it into the hot seat—Matt Damon!” A Poetic Question to Remember But when it came time for the final question, the studio fell silent.
The million-dollar question was: “Which of these words describes one of the most beautiful sound effects in the world: the soft noise made when wind rustles through leaves?” No problem for the trivia master. There were four terms to choose from, but after using their final lifeline, only two remained: petrichor and susurrus. Jennings, a seasoned quiz champion, was right in his element.
“Petrichor is the smell of rain on dry earth—every trivia fan knows that!” So it became clear: Susurrus—that soft, whispering word—had to be the correct answer. What Happened to the Million? Damon, visibly moved, was later called “the Michael Jordan of the trivia world” by Jennings, who compared their victory to a street basketball game where you suddenly find yourself teamed up with a superstar.
The $1 million prize will go to Water.org, the charity co-founded by Damon that works to provide clean drinking water around the world. ABC also had reason to celebrate: the episode scored the show’s highest ratings in five years, with 5% more viewers than the previous week. And what may be the most poetic trivia question in TV history now holds a permanent place in the memories of many fans. Why Damon Has a Beard And if you’re still wondering why Damon appeared in the studio with such a scruffy beard: he’s currently filming as Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movie adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey.
