An extremely violent armed attack shook the city of Salamanca, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, leaving at least eleven people dead and twelve others injured after a shooting at a community soccer field, according to local authorities and national media reports. The attack occurred on Sunday, as people were gathered at the field following an amateur match. Initial reports indicate that armed men arrived in at least two vehicles and opened fire indiscriminately on those present before fleeing the scene.
Emergency responders and security forces rushed to the site. Ten victims died at the soccer field, while one additional victim later died at a hospital due to the severity of their injuries. Police recovered more than one hundred spent shell casings, underscoring the intensity of the assault. Authorities confirmed that several of the wounded remain in serious condition.
Investigators continue to work to identify those responsible, and no arrests have been announced so far, as officials assess possible motives behind the attack. While the precise circumstances remain unclear, the shooting took place in a region long affected by organized crime-related violence. Guanajuato consistently ranks among Mexico’s most violent states, largely due to disputes between criminal groups involved in drug trafficking and fuel theft.
Salamanca is home to one of Mexico’s most important oil refineries, operated by state-owned company Pemex, making the area strategically significant for criminal organizations seeking control over illegal fuel operations, commonly known as “huachicol.” In response to the attack, state authorities announced heightened security measures, including increased patrols and coordination with federal forces, aimed at preventing further violence and restoring a sense of safety for residents.
The attack has deeply shaken the local community and has once again fueled national debate over Mexico’s ongoing security crisis, particularly in regions where criminal violence continues to reach public spaces and everyday social gatherings.
