Russian forces launched a large-scale attack on strategic targets across Ukraine, focusing primarily on facilities linked to the military-industrial complex and key energy infrastructure. The offensive comes amid winter conditions, with nighttime temperatures in several Ukrainian regions falling well below freezing, intensifying the humanitarian impact of the strikes. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused the Kremlin of deliberately exploiting the cold as an additional weapon in the conflict.
According to Zelensky, Moscow is seeking to weaken both Ukraine’s military capabilities and civilian resilience by targeting essential energy systems at a critical time for the population. Russia’s Ministry of Defense confirmed the operation, stating that precision ground-based weapons were used against energy facilities, military installations, and enterprises connected to Ukraine’s military-industrial sector.
Moscow framed the attack as retaliation for previous Ukrainian strikes on civilian infrastructure inside Russian territory. Earlier, Zelensky had warned of the likelihood of a renewed wave of large-scale attacks. In his nightly address, he cited intelligence reports suggesting a coordinated use of drones and missiles aimed at overwhelming Ukraine’s air defenses. He urged citizens to closely follow air raid alerts in the coming days. The violence claimed lives near the northeastern city of Kharkiv.
Ukrainian authorities reported that at least four people were killed and six others injured in a Russian drone attack on the outskirts of the city. Regional governor Oleh Synehubov confirmed the casualties through a statement on Telegram. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said that a long-range Russian drone struck a children’s medical facility, triggering a fire. Initial assessments indicated that no one was injured at that specific site, though the incident heightened fears among local residents.
In southeastern Ukraine, explosions were also reported in the Zaporizhzhia region. Governor Ivan Fedorov said the area was hit during the Russian assault, while in the capital Kyiv, military administration chief Tymur Tkachenko warned of continued threats from ballistic missile attacks and urged residents to remain cautious.
The conflict also resulted in casualties on Russian soil. According to Russian authorities, one person was killed on Monday afternoon in a Ukrainian drone strike in the border region of Bryansk. Regional governor Alexander Bogomas said the victim died while traveling by car near the village of Strachovo, close to the Ukrainian border.
