The debate over Greenland’s future has intensified in Europe following renewed statements from the United States, triggering contrasting reactions within Germany’s political and military leadership. While the foreign minister continues to advocate for a NATO-based solution, military voices are warning that the situation demands a stronger and more visible European response.
Patrick Sensburg, head of the German Armed Forces Reservists Association, expressed alarm over the growing geopolitical pressure surrounding the Arctic island and called for the rapid deployment of European troops to Greenland. He argued that Europe must significantly strengthen its presence in the territory to avoid being sidelined in critical strategic decisions. According to Sensburg, Europe cannot afford to underestimate the seriousness of U.S. President Donald Trump’s stance on Greenland.
He urged European leaders to assume that Washington’s intentions are genuine and to prepare accordingly through coordinated military action. Specifically, Sensburg proposed relocating two European brigades to Greenland on short notice, under Danish command. Denmark retains sovereignty over the autonomous territory, and Sensburg stressed that Germany would have a special responsibility within such a collective effort.
Beyond deterrence, Sensburg suggested that a European deployment could also provide strategic benefits for the Bundeswehr. Greenland, he said, could serve as a valuable environment for training and exercises in Arctic and winter warfare conditions. From his perspective, a joint European presence would not only enhance military readiness but also strengthen political cohesion across the continent.
He argued that closer cooperation in Greenland could bring Europe more tightly together on security issues. The renewed debate follows recent remarks by President Donald Trump, who once again publicly asserted his country’s interest in Greenland. Trump stated that the United States would acquire the island “one way or another,” claiming it was necessary to prevent Russia or China from expanding their influence in the region.
Trump also made dismissive comments about Greenland’s local defense capabilities, further fueling controversy. His remarks have revived discussions in Europe about NATO’s role, the continent’s strategic autonomy, and the urgency of a coordinated response to growing geopolitical competition in the Arctic.
