In the heart of Mexico City's historic center, President Claudia Sheinbaum became the target of harassment when a man managed to approach her, wrap his arm around her, and attempt to kiss her in public.

The incident surprised those around her and sparked a national debate on security and respect toward women, especially when the victim is the country’s highest-ranking leader. The event triggered criticism of the administration’s security strategy, as Sheinbaum, like former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has declined the military protection unit traditionally assigned for presidential security.

The attack reignited the question of whether it is feasible to maintain such an approach while safeguarding the president’s physical safety in open public spaces, where constant interaction with citizens requires immediate response and heightened vigilance. Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada strongly condemned the incident and reaffirmed a zero-tolerance stance against harassment and violence toward women.

“When you touch the president, you touch all of us,” she said, emphasizing that the capital will not tolerate such behavior under any circumstance. Authorities announced reinforced security protocols to prevent similar situations and underscored their commitment to ensuring safety without restricting citizen access.
