A Brexit summit took an unexpected turn on Monday when several lawmakers redirected the meeting to condemn what they described as the “excessive nature” of Israel’s war against Hamas. What was meant to be a discussion focused on post-Brexit cooperation, trade, and regulatory alignment quickly transformed into a platform for strong criticism of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Participants —a mix of British MPs and Members of the European Parliament (MEPs)— argued that Israel’s military response has gone beyond the limits of legitimate self-defense and raised deep concerns about the humanitarian impact on Palestinian civilians.

Several representatives called for the United Kingdom and the European Union to coordinate diplomatic and legal efforts to investigate “alleged war crimes” attributed to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, including strikes on civilian infrastructure and the prolonged restriction of essential supplies.

The meeting was held in the House of Commons as part of the sixth edition of the UK-EU Parliamentary Partnership Assembly (PPA), a 70-member body established to oversee and discuss the evolving relationship between London and Brussels after Brexit. However, the tone of the session revealed how major international crises can easily overshadow the scheduled agenda. Instead of limiting the debate to technical issues such as trade, border cooperation, and regulatory frameworks, the assembly shifted into a heated discussion on human rights, international accountability, and the role both London and Brussels should play amid the escalating war.

For some lawmakers, the episode highlighted that foreign policy cannot be neatly separated from domestic debates about Europe’s future. Others warned that the PPA risks drifting away from its core mandate if it becomes a platform for external geopolitical disputes. Still, one message was unmistakable: the war in the Middle East is also being fought in the arena of European diplomacy and political discourse.
