The Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has rejected a proposal from U.S. President Donald Trump to open a new round of talks on Iran’s nuclear program, accusing Washington of “pressure and harassment” disguised as negotiation. In his statement, the top political and religious figure of the Islamic Republic also dismissed claims that the United States had “destroyed” Iran’s nuclear capabilities, asserting that the country maintains its “strategic deterrence” and will not accept “conditions imposed” from abroad.

The announcement comes amid a cycle of high regional tension and in the shadow of June’s events, when U.S. and Israeli forces were reported to have targeted sensitive facilities inside Iran during a twelve-day escalation. Tehran denies any structural damage and accuses its adversaries of waging a “psychological war,” while Washington insists that the combined pressure—sanctions, military deployments, and covert operations—was meant to force verifiable changes in Iran’s nuclear and ballistic behavior.

Within that context, Khamenei framed his refusal as a defense of sovereignty and internal stability against what he described as “diplomatic blackmail.” The background recalls the five rounds of indirect contacts held between Iran and the United States after Washington’s withdrawal from the 2018 nuclear accord—talks that never produced a new agreement.

With positions hardening, the room for compromise has narrowed: Tehran demands tangible guarantees and a phased lifting of sanctions; Washington calls for stricter verification mechanisms and clearer limits on uranium enrichment. Without a gesture to unlock the agenda—be it inspections, humanitarian steps, or regional de-escalation—the nuclear file risks once again being trapped between accusations, counterattacks, and a diplomacy running out of breath.

The diplomatic standoff between Tehran and Washington now turns into a test of endurance. Each side claims strength; neither offers concessions. For the international community, the challenge is no longer about rhetoric — it’s about preventing another cycle of isolation, retaliation, and missed opportunities in a region that cannot afford more tension.
